Transformer oil testing gives you a clear picture of the condition of your transformer and insulating fluid. Early detection of changes in chemical characteristics or contamination within the insulating fluid provides early warning of potential problems, preventing unwanted downtime and costly unplanned maintenance.
Regular testing of transformer oils is a long-standing industry practice and is a key element in managing maintenance throughout the life cycle of a transformer.
During normal operation, transformer oils act as a liquid insulator and allow the transformer to cool. Excessive electrical stresses or the presence of foreign bodies may reduce the life of certain components, which can lead to failures, explosions or fires.
Regular analysis and monitoring provide a better understanding of the condition of the transformer and the oil it contains.
Three test packages are available:
- Oil Quality Package - Colour, Water Content, Acidity, Breakdown Voltage and Interfacial Tension testing.
- Oil Quality + Dissolved Gas Analysis Package - to also obtain information on gas concentrations.
- Oil Quality, Dissolved Gas + Furan Package - to also obtain Furan testing.

How to use this kit?
Once the order is placed, you will receive sampling kit with bottle and syringe. Ensure you have a sampling pump (sold separately), and correct fittings to connect to transformer. Sampling must be done in a very clean environment ensuring the sample is not contaminated with any dirt or exposed to any environmental moisture. Detailed sampling description is available on request and should be performed by trained personnel only.
Please record as many transformer details as possible on the slip provided and ensure the serial number is included.
After analysis, the report will be sent to you by email and will be available on a customised application.

Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)
Under thermal or electrical stress, transformer oils can decompose and create gases. The combination of these gases and their respective concentrations can provide indications of the type of fault that has occurred. Typical faults that can be identified include: arcing, partial discharge and thermal anomalies.
How it works
-
Once your order is registered, an analysis kit will be sent to you. You will be notified by email when your package is shipped.
-
Collect your sample using the Kit. Return your sample to the laboratory at the address on the envelope.
-
Once we receive your sample, our scientists will analyze and diagnose your sample.
-
The results will be sent to you by email and will be available on the application.
